UNIQUE STRINGED INSTRUMENTS
a music appreciation lesson
Sitar with Anoushka Shankar
Ravi Shankar, teacher of the Beatles, brought the sitar to the West.
This video is of his daughter, Anoushka Shankar.

21 strings!! But only 7 are played with the fingers.
See if you can catch Anoushka bending strings.
The frets are raised metal bars. The player doesn't press the strings onto a wooden fret board. The strings just touches the metal bar.
Most of the strings just ring "sympathetically."
This instrument is mostly found India, Pakistan, and Nepal
Oud with
Anwar Brahem
The Oud is an African lute.
It has NO FRETS
The instrument has either 11 or 13 strings.
Strings are grouped together in 2s and 3s and you pluck a whole group to get one note.
See if you can tell from watching the video.

Pictures of the Oud have been found in Mesopotamian sites. 3000 BC!?!
Anwar Brahem is from Tunisia, which is in North Africa.
He plays with lots of jazz musicians from all over the world.
The long black instrument he is playing with here is called a Bass Clarinet. The fingering is the same as the clarinet our Gr 6 band students play.
