CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH:

BEETHOVEN'S 7th SYMPHONY

2nd MOVEMENT

Lesson One: Beethoven's symphonies (and piano sonatas) often have slower 2nd movements that are famous for their timeless melodies. In this unit we will learn a few of them and experience how they fit together.

The second movement of his 7th symphony, which is about 9 minutes long, is almost a cliche in film music at this point.  It seems to suggest so many different feelings in people.

It starts out so simply and builds with different themes and counter melodies to quite a powerful climax. We wlll study 4 of these themes and rhythms this month.

1) Listen to the 2nd movement up until 3 minutes and 33 seconds.  (You know you've gone too far if the music suddenly becomes pastoral and pretty.)

2) What kind of movie scenes can you imagine using the different parts of this music for?

I CAN: Understand that music conveys meaning, emotion, and narrative.
