CONDUCTING
Here's our friend Gustavo Dudamel again. Listen to his experience of learning to conduct as a child.
The conductor plays the orchestra as their instrument.
The conductor is the one who conveys the whole picture.
They probably know the overall score the best.

Conductors have style. They dance with their hands, shoulders, head, knees, face. Once you learn the basic movement you can start expressing the music in the conducting.
Now!! We are learning to conduct a short piece by Edvard Grieg. The music is in 4/4 time and changes volume (crescendo and diminuendo) and tempo (accelerando and ritardando) throughout.

Here are your four hand positions for the four beats
One
Down
Two
Together
Three
Away
Four
Up
If you practice conducting this piece three or four times then you will probably be able to say:
I CAN: Conduct in 4/4.
I CAN: Play or conduct accelerando
ritardando,
crescendo and
diminuendo.
Some of you may conduct with a lot of feeling.
Or pretend to take on a character who is in the music. Like a theatre game,
Or feel how conducting is a musical performance.
Or make conducting into a dance.
Or play like a child like Gustavo
I CAN: Express myself through conducting.
